I was going to be passing through the Santa Fe area so I logged into Harvest Hosts and found a unique sounding place: Blue Mesa Alpacas. I called the owner, Bob, and he confirmed that I could park on his farm. The mistake that I made was arriving a little later in the day, around 5pm. Once I arrived and parked, there was a big fenced in area of about 20 alpacas right near my van! I was excited because this was my first time seeing one in real life!
I didn’t know much about them, besides that they spit and Bob was inside so I never approached the fence. I stayed in my van and took off the next morning. Days after I left, I was still regretting that I didn’t arrive earlier for a quick tour or properly introducing myself to the alpacas. Thankfully my travel plans had me passing through the Santa Fe area again a couple of weeks later so I had the chance of a do-over!
For round 2, I arrived at 2 pm, in time for a tour of the Blue Mesa Alpaca farm! At the time of my visit, Bob had around 50 alpacas. Bob rattled off a plethora of fun alpaca facts to me while I fed them grass through the fence. Bob gave me a tour of the ranch, which includes an alpaca themed gift shop. During the tour, I met all of the other animals on the farm: 7 horses, 3 Great Pyrenees dogs (which make wonderful guardian dogs for alpacas), 2 indoor cats, 2 barn cats, and 2 super-cute little mini-mules, Romeo and Juliette!
The mini mules were adorable and I really enjoyed the alpacas! The alpacas were very sweet and I’m adding them to my favorite animals list.
The Blue Mesa Ranch was kept up really well and I love that they are so supportive of RV’ers like myself by being a member of Harvest Hosts! I definitely recommend this stop and I’ll be back again whenever I’m through the area!
